Protect an Egg Performance Task

This week students worked to design solutions to prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a height of two meters.  Biomechanical engineers design solutions to protect people.  Biomechanical engineers who work on cars use crash test dummies to test protective designs.  We used eggs for our crash tests.

Students began by designing and sketching a model of their design.  Then they began building their protective device with partners.

After students built their models it was time for the eggs and the crash tests. Thanks to Mrs. Kelly (Andrew's Mom) for donating the eggs.

Students would examine their egg and evaluate the success of their design.  Groups then redesigned and tested again.  Some groups added a second egg to their device to test if additional mass would change the effectiveness of their models.
